The band was formed in 1987 under
the fearless leadership of the keyboard playing, tuxedo shirt wearing
individual, lead singer Joey. Singing backup and on lead guitar was Snake
and on bass the instable Wheels. With the song "Everybody Wants Something",
The Zits went straight to number one, becoming the greatest band at Degassi.
The demo tape, "The Zit Remedy...Live!" was produced and recorded the night of Wheels' parents death. As a result of the alledged bad influence Joey had on Wheels, his parents forbid him from hanging out with him. Sneaking out after his parents left for a movie, Wheels, with guitar case in hand proceeded to enter Zit Records (Joey's Basement). After the recording, Snake and Wheels walked home talking of how they hated the rules they had to live by and how cool it would be to live on their own without their parents. A police car was outside the Wheeler residence where his grandmother broke the new that his parents were killed by a drunk driver. Emotionally distraught, Wheels blamed Joey for making him disobey his parents and wished he was dead with them. Wheels vented his anger upon Joey, beating him up outside their lockers and breaking the tape of their song. Wheels became a troubled child and found it hard living wih his grandparents and began skipping school. The last straw was when he sold his Bass Guitar in favour of video games and french fries. His reasoning being "Its not like we were going anywhere Joey". During this time, the Zits were broken. It wasn't until they heard Simon on bass that they found a new prospect. Nothing was finalized, but he brought new blood into a dying group for a while. With junior high coming to an end and the tragic burning down of the school, it was questionable as to whether of not they would stay together. The 8th graders would be sent up to the big leagues with them and as a result of the overcrowding, letters were handed out to reflect this. As it turned out, all cast members remained together and life at Degrassi went on. With Wheels back in the picture, the band thought of ways to change their image and make a fresh start in their new surroundings. They dropped the REMEDY part from their name in favour of something more mature (not unlike NKOTB) and became known primarily as "The Zits". Still with only one hit under their belt and Joey peddling copies of the tape from an old briefcase, the millions and millions fans just weren't biting. In order to boost awareness, Joey began working at the CRA-Z radio station as a sanitation inspector (AKA Janitor) and 'accidentally' left behind a copy of his tape whenever he could. Sally (Sue Johanson of Sunday Night Sex Show fame) commented on the song and told Joey to keep it up. With that idea crushed, they looked to the bright and upcoming young filmmaker Ms. Lucy Fernandez to produce a music video. With the help of Clutch's car and the twins doing the sound and lighting, it was made. Unfortunately it was never said what became of the Zit video after that episode. As episodes of Degrassi High continued, the band was talked about less and less until it basically faded into non-existense and not affecting the plot of the show. Even at the talent show where Claude was to perform his soliloquy to Caitlin, I would have guessed that they would have played their song one more time, but alas, it did not happen. |
